Cardigan v Pembroke Dock Quins

The Quins certainly put the demons of last years defeat firmly behind them with a strong and gutsy display at the King George V playing fields on Saturday.

The early stages certainly belonged to the hosts but the Quins were repeatedly snuffing out the Cardi's attacks behind the gain line. Two kickable penalties were turned down as the hosts tried in vain to force the Quins back over their own line. The Quins back row of Steffan Hallward, Luke Wooton and Hywel Baker were outstanding with some bone jarring tackles. With 20 minutes gone the score was still 0-0 but the Quins were now coming back strongly. The Quins forced numerous penalties and Outside Half Jake Griffiths pinned the hosts back into the corner. It was now the hosts turn to defend and with the outstanding Aaron Boswell being ably abetted by the ever improving George Bellmaine winning some superb lineout ball the pressure was mounting, and it was no surprise when the hosts eventually cracked when Captain and Centre Thomas Doyle took the ball on the burst and pirouetted over the line for a fine Try which went unconverted. For the rest of the half it was all Quins, as the silence from the stands became very noticeable. So it was the Quins who went into the break with a 0-5 deserved lead.

The Quins could not have got the 2nd half of to worse start, with just 3 minutes in Right Wing Rhyddian Jenkins finished of a fine move when he touched down in the Corner, Centre Emyr Harries Converted to put the hosts in front for the first time in the match. On 50 minutes Emyr Harries slotted a fine penalty to his side 10 -5 to the good. It looked all over for the Quins when No 8 Rob Connolly forced his way for his sides 2nd try which was converted by Emyr Harries. The Quins, however, as they did in the first half came bouncing back and were soon camped on the hosts 5 metre line and when they were awarded a penalty, a quick tap and go was all they needed as replacement Prop Josh Boswell took the ball at pace as he crashed over near the uprights. Jake Griffiths added the extras and with the score at 17-12 it was suddenly game on. Unfortunately it was the hosts who grabbed a close range try through replacement Flanker Owain Rees with only 7 minutes remaining, but the Quins once again forced their way up field. The Quins spurned a difficult penalty chance in the last minute which would have given them a losing bonus point as they tried to grab themselves a 3rd try.
